Days Like This...

Make me very happy I use a phosphate remover in my pool.

There is a dust storm blowing through. After such storms I used to be one of the people who stood in line at the pool store to buy shock and algaecide to turn my pool back to its sparkling beauty from the resultant public toilet appearance it would have after such a storm.

The phosphate remover alleviates all this trouble by removing one of the nutrients needed by the algae itself.

Spending $200 on Phosphate remover a year saves me over $400 in shock, algaecide and The Almighty knows what other chemicals.

The "initfo", aka what is in it for me, is more hours of pool enjoyment on demand without having to work on the pool to prep it over the 72 hours before a weekend.

To put it simply phosphate removers like Phos Free put spontaneity into my life, remove complaints from family members and save me money.

Win. Win. Win.

Stupid Cop Tricks: Justice For Kathryn Johnston

Two officers plead guilty to Manslaughter charges and more in the murder of 92 year old Kathryn Johnston in a "no knock" raid.

From the initial reports it was obvious this was nothing more than homicide as the result of the incredibly lax standards police now follow when it comes to obtaining warrants, the lack of reproof from the government over their egregious violations of the Bill of Rights and no fear of responsibility for their misdeeds.

I sincerely hope this will be a turning point for police behavior and calls for accountability throughout the nation.

One uniformed thug involved has decided to go to trial. I will provide another update when this occurs.

Update: The sickening pattern of lies, outright fraud and criminal behavior of the police involved is listed in detail here.

The Real Che

Babalu blog has a post linking to a book on the real Che Guevara.

•How Che longed to destroy New York City with nuclear missiles.

• How Che promoted book burning and signed death warrants for authors who disagreed with him.

• How Che made amazingly racist statements about blacks.

• How Che persecuted gays, long-haired rock and roll fans, and religious people.

• How Che, the devoted communist, loved material wealth and private luxuries.

Urban Shooter

Urban Shooter is a blog about love and responsible firearms ownership.

Of special note is a post from Ken Blanchard regarding the Racist Roots of Gun Control. Read The Whole Thing.

It should be noted that I also have found this to be sadly true even in our current day and age.

Stop on by and give it a read and a listen.

Failures of Prohibition

LawDog has a post up regarding the futility of prohibitions, whether those be regarding firearms, alcohol or recreational pharmaceuticals.

If nothing else, history has taught us that simply banning an item gives it cache. Whether that is alcohol, drugs or guns. Every item banned will be available on the black market. In many cases the price will even be lower on the black market than it was when the item was legal.

I am against the so called War On Drugs. Do I take these "recreational pharmaceuticals"? Hell no. I have never even smoked marijuana let alone touched cocaine, crystal meth amphetamine, hashish, etc. If it were legal would I touch any of them? Again hell no.

Do I think the United States of America is safer with any of these items ban, again, hell no.

Go read the whole thing.

Results Of Gun Control

Alphecca has a link to a post reminding us of the results of Gun Control; mass murder performed by the state.

Read the whole thing.

Note: Hitler never made the quote, "This year will go down in history. For the first time a civilized nation has full gun registration. The street will be safer, the police more efficient and the world will follow our lead into the future." That was spoken by Adolf Hitler, on April 15, 1935". Other than that the article is a good one.

McCain Of Late

Would have had a much more solid with the conservative and libertarian elements in the Republican party had he consistently displayed this type of common sense over the last few years.

When asked about the VT shootings Senator McCain recently backed 2nd Amendment rights :

We have to look at what happened here, but it doesn't change my views on the Second Amendment, except to make sure that these kinds of weapons don't fall into the hands of bad people," McCain said Monday in response to a question.
I do believe in the constitutional right that everyone has, in the Second Amendment to the Constitution, to carry a weapon," he said. "Obviously we have to keep guns in the hands of law-abiding citizens.
And add to this sudden attack of common sense the following where he sings bomb Iran to the bune of the Beach Boy's Barbara Ann when asked what should be done about Iran and its nuclear weapons program.

Of course I am unconvinced by this sudden turn to the right. Between trying to outlaw individual personal sales of firearms and the "gun show loophole" and his stance on eliminating free speech (McCain Feingold) behavior this sudden turn does not eliminate the doubt on where he stands created by his behavior in the past.

Stupid Cop Tricks: Secret Service Unholstered

An astounding tale of incompetence has occurred at the White House. One of the Secret Service agents tasked with defending our President wounded two fellow Secret Service agents when he negligently discharged his weapon.

That is correct. The agency trusted with safeguarding the President of the United States of America cannot keep their booger hook off the trigger.

So as a community service and out of my sense of patriotic duty, here is a run down on the four top safety rules of handling a weapon:

  1. All guns are always loaded. Even if they are not, treat them as if they are.
  2. Never let the muzzle cover anything you are not willing to destroy. (For those who insist that this particular gun is unloaded, see Rule 1.)
  3. Keep your finger off the trigger till your sights are on the target. This is the Golden Rule. Its violation is directly responsible for about 60 percent of inadvertent discharges.
  4. Identify your target, and what is behind it. Never shoot at anything that you have not positively identified.

Of course I am waiting for the video. No reason the Secret Service should not be shamed as was the ATF.

Victim Disarmament Zone Tragedy

A loathsome insane murderer took 31 lives today at the Virginia Tech campus.

VT is a campus made safe by the recent refusal of the Virginia legislature to send a bill out of committee and pass it that would have allowed concealed carry licensed students and teachers to have the means to stop this madman earlier in his rampage.

The loss of life was not avoidable. Any criminal malcontent will disregard the law and carry out their evil designs to punish the world around them.

This does not mean that the loss of life could not have been stopped more quickly with a lower toll of human life.

Had their been a brave person armed at the site the killer could have been stopped more quickly as seen in the Salt Lake City mall shooting.

My prayers will be with the families of those who lost loved ones and with the wounded.

Fred Fry Int'l Remembers The Soviet Union

Fred Fry International, a naval affairs website, remembers the late, unlamented by the free world Soviet Union.

The Soviet Union was one of the most murderous, criminal regimes to ever exist on this planet. Despite falling apart in the early nineties, it is greatly responsible for most of the conflicts we see to this day. It is important to understand the contribution of the Soviet Union to global conflict as Russia today continues to create instability in the world. In addition, it is good to note and remember what the Soviet Union did during it's existence on Earth. Especially considering the following:

Russian president Vladimir Putin considers the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 as one of the greatest catastrophes of the 20th century. His attitude is shared by many other Russians who came of age during the twilight of the Soviet Union. These people are running the country now, and they are not afraid to express nostalgia for the lost glories of the Soviet era. But the kids who came of age after 1991, are less impressed with the Soviet era, and not automatically ant-American. But for another generation, a Cold War mentality will live on among the Russian ruling class.

A recent survey found that 68 percent of Russians believed the breakup of the Soviet Union was a mistake, and 51 percent would vote to restore the Soviet Union. Similar surveys found that in some former parts of the Soviet Union, lots of people were in favor of re-joining the Soviet Union (45 percent in Ukraine, 36 percent in Belarus.) - Strategy Page

Monstrous atrocities abounded during the Soviet Union's brief but bloody tenure in our world:

Artificial Famine (Genocide) in Ukraine - 1932 -1933
(artificial famine of 1932-33, which caused upwards of 7 million deaths in Ukraine)

Stalin's Intervention to ensure Hitler's Election in Germany:
During the critical 1932 German elections, he forbid the German Communists from collaborating with the Social Democrats. These parties together gained more votes than Hitler and could have prevented him from becoming Chancellor. - Wikipedia
Partially Responsible for World War II
According to the Historian Richard Pipes, the Communist states share some responsibility for World War II. Both Hitler and Mussolini used the Soviet Union as a model for their own totalitarian states and Hitler privately expressed that Stalin was a "genius". In turn, Stalin expressed desire for another great war that would leave his enemies weakened and allow Soviet expansion. He allowed the testing and production of German weapons that were forbidden by the Versailles Treaty to occur on Soviet territory. - Wikipedia
Brutal occupation of Germany and other territories:
Once a year, aging Red Army veterans who fought in the battle for Berlin gather in that city’s suburb of Treptower Park, where some 5,000 of their comrades are buried. But as Jason Cowley of the Guardian reported, one local refers to it as “the site of the unknown rapist.” No doubt there are others who share this sentiment: During that first year of Soviet occupation in 1945, more than 100,000 women in Berlin were raped. Combined with the German women caught in Pomerania, Silesia, and East Prussia during the mass exodus, the number of rape victims soars to roughly 2 million. Many of them subsequently committed suicide. - a Contest of Brutality
While the neo-apparatchiks and nomenklatura of the current Russian government mourn the loss of the evil empire, those of us old enough to remember its mass murders and promotion of conflict throughout the world consider its consignment to the ash bin of history a small payment on the vast crimes committed in its name.

This is the real world result of socialism and communism. The next time you hear someone advocating either of them remember the millions of murders caused to date by just one communist regime.

Immigration Gone Right

Here is a link to a post about an American who shows how the United States of America attracts the best and brightest.

This is immigration gone right, the kind we need more of.

Death Of A Thousand Cuts

The good Commander has a flash news update regarding the Little Crappy Ship Littoral Combat Ship program; the third ship under construction has been canceled due!

This is a victory for the American people in that our tax dollars are not going to be wasted on a ship that costs $500 million without combat modules to provide capability beyond basic maneuvering.

That is right the Navy's power point commandos in the Pentagon had come up with a half billion dollar corvette sized ship that could not fight.

It will be interesting to see what design is implemented to make up for combatant capability lost as the Spruance class ships are being sank in training exercises and the Perry class ships are rapidly being withdrawn from service as well.

For all those large ship fans out there, those that love their battleships and carriers, there needs to be a full fleet with rounded capabilities to project power and protect the Sea Lanes of Communication. Escort vessels such as frigates and destroyers make up this crucial, large numeric portion of the fleet. This is also where the next Halseys, Fletchers, Spruances, Spragues and Deweys will get their experience in leadership positions.

This is an important first step in rebuilding our navy and maintaining our supremacy on the high seas.

Immigrants Urged To Learn English

A California city business organization has began an $4.6M effort to advocate and support immigrants learning English.

The campaign in Santa Ana, where more than three-quarters of residents are Hispanic and less than 15 percent speak English at home, offers free language classes at a community college and take-home study kits.

"Employers have been coming to us saying: 'Look, we don't have enough people to hire that speak English," said Dale Ward, executive vice president of the Santa Ana Chamber of Commerce.

"Two-thirds of our workforce does not qualify for an entry-level job in growth industries because they do not speak English or do not speak English well enough."

Emphasis Added.

It simply boils down to the fact that without English there are many jobs that you cannot perform. This limits upward mobility within the community and the level of success that you and your children could obtain.

Also to the point should the work force not meet the demands of the employers, the jobs will be moved by the company owners to locations that have the workforce with the requisite skills. This means that all the jobs that support those companies would dissappear as well. This would eventually lead to the elimination of jobs that do not require English proficiency as their customer base relocated.

What we have when immigrants are not encouraged to assimilate and learn the language, laws and customs of the land is the creation of second class citizens, forever locked into menial tasks and the welfare system. These individuals live at the margins of society dependent upon low skilled work and government hand outs to survive. This increases friction with the community at large. Look to France, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, the Netherlands and other Western European nations for the results of immigration without assimilation; civil war is on the horizon.

Remember its the American melting pot that we learned of in school as children. Americans can be from any place on Earth and are tied together by the principles as laid down in the U.S. Constitution and Declaration of Independence. Come to the United States of America, bring your desire to be free and work hard. Learn the de facto language of the land (English), understand the legal and cultural underpinnings of our society and bring the unique and special portions of your culture to be included. It as American as lamb at Easter, Apple Pie on the fourth of july, Bratwurst in the summer time, turkey and lasagna at Thanksgiving, tamale's at Christmas and black eyed peas for the New Year.

Proponents Of Victimization: Illinois State Police

Tam strikes out with the spiked clue bat to the Illinois State Police's recommendations for women should they be attacked.

So, the Illinois State Gendarmerie has put up a web page full of, erm... "helpful" advice for women in case we are attacked. Guns, of course, are a no-no because apparently (at least according to them) we're so flighty that half of the time we try to use a gun for self-defense, we wind up busting a cap in the wrong individual. I'd really love to see their data on that one. (Yeah, you're all the time reading about how some woman in a parking lot somewhere ran her Glock to slidelock in some guy because he pulled a wallet on her. This is me rolling my eyes.)

Instead of a handy, portable weapon that requires no great amount of strength to operate, we are instead advised to attempt to take on a 250lb rapist with a teasing brush or a handful of keys. Brilliant plan, that. "Well, sir, we couldn't revive her, but her assailant should be easy to spot in a lineup. Judging by what she had clenched in her hand in her last moments, his hair should look fantastic."

Since Illinois is one of the gulags where they keep their wives and daughters disarmed and easily victimized, it is no surprise to me their State Police should espouse such hornswoggle.

Update: Say Uncle wields the spiked clue bat on this one as well.

Happy Easter!

He is not here...He is Risen.

Pope Benedict XVI Easter message:

Dear Brothers and Sisters throughout the world,

Men and women of good will!

Christ is risen! Peace to you! Today we celebrate the great mystery, the foundation of Christian faith and hope: Jesus of Nazareth, the Crucified One, has risen from the dead on the third day according to the Scriptures. We listen today with renewed emotion to the announcement proclaimed by the angels on the dawn of the first day after the Sabbath, to Mary of Magdala and to the women at the sepulcher: "Why do you search among the dead for one who is alive? He is not here, he is risen!" (Luke 24:5-6)

It is not difficult to imagine the feelings of these women at that moment: feelings of sadness and dismay at the death of their Lord, feelings of disbelief and amazement before a fact too astonishing to be true. But the tomb was open and empty: the body was no longer there. Peter and John, having been informed of this by the women, ran to the sepulcher and found that they were right. The faith of the Apostles in Jesus, the expected Messiah, had been submitted to a severe trial by the scandal of the cross. At his arrest, his condemnation and death, they were dispersed. Now they are together again, perplexed and bewildered. But the Risen One himself comes in response to their thirst for greater certainty. This encounter was not a dream or an illusion or a subjective imagination; it was a real experience, even if unexpected, and all the more striking for that reason. "Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, peace be with you!" (John 20:19)

At these words their faith, which was almost spent within them, was rekindled. The Apostles told Thomas who had been absent from that first extraordinary encounter: Yes, the Lord has fulfilled all that he foretold; he is truly risen and we have seen and touched him! Thomas however remained doubtful and perplexed. When Jesus came for a second time, eight days later in the Upper Room, he said to him: "Put your finger here and see my hands; and put out your hand and place it in my side; do not be faithless, but believing!" The Apostles response is a moving profession of faith: "My Lord and my God!" (John 20:27-28)

"My Lord and my God!" We too renew that profession of faith of Thomas. I have chosen these words for my Easter greetings this year, because humanity today expects from Christians a renewed witness to the resurrection of Christ; it needs to encounter him and to know him as true God and true man. If we can recognize in this Apostle the doubts and uncertainties of so many Christians today, the fears and disappointments of many of our contemporaries, with him we can also rediscover with renewed conviction, faith in Christ dead and risen for us. This faith, handed down through the centuries by the successors of the Apostles, continues on because the Risen Lord dies no more. He lives in the Church and guides it firmly toward the fulfillment of his eternal design of salvation.

We may all be tempted by the disbelief of Thomas. Suffering, evil, injustice, death, especially when it strikes the innocent such as children who are victims of war and terrorism, of sickness and hunger, does not all of this put our faith to the test? Paradoxically the disbelief of Thomas is most valuable to us in these cases because it helps to purify all false concepts of God and leads us to discover his true face: the face of a God who, in Christ, has taken upon himself the wounds of injured humanity. Thomas has received from the Lord, and has in turn transmitted to the Church, the gift of a faith put to the test by the passion and death of Jesus and confirmed by meeting him risen. His faith was almost dead but was born again thanks to his touching the wounds of Christ, those wounds that the Risen One did not hide but showed, and continues to point out to us in the trials and sufferings of every human being.

"By his wounds you have been healed" (1 Peter 2:24). This is the message Peter addressed to the early converts. Those wounds that, in the beginning were an obstacle for Thomas' faith, being a sign of Jesus apparent failure, those same wounds have become in his encounter with the Risen One, signs of a victorious love. These wounds that Christ has received for love of us help us to understand who God is and to repeat: "My Lord and my God!" Only a God who loves us to the extent of taking upon himself our wounds and our pain, especially innocent suffering, is worthy of faith.

How many wounds, how much suffering there is in the world! Natural calamities and human tragedies that cause innumerable victims and enormous material destruction are not lacking. My thoughts go to recent events in Madagascar, in the Solomon Islands, in Latin America and in other regions of the world. I am thinking of the scourge of hunger, of incurable diseases, of terrorism and kidnapping of people, of the thousand faces of violence, which some people attempt to justify in the name of religion, of contempt for life, of the violation of human rights and the exploitation of persons. I look with apprehension at the conditions prevailing in several regions of Africa. In Darfur and in the neighboring countries there is a catastrophic, and sadly to say underestimated, humanitarian situation. In Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of the Congo the violence and looting of the past weeks raises fears for the future of the Congolese democratic process and the reconstruction of the country. In Somalia the renewed fighting has driven away the prospect of peace and worsened a regional crisis, especially with regard to the displacement of populations and the traffic of arms. Zimbabwe is in the grip of a grievous crisis and for this reason the Bishops of that country in a recent document indicated prayer and a shared commitment for the common good as the only way forward.

Likewise the population of East Timor stands in need of reconciliation and peace as it prepares to hold important elections. Elsewhere, too, peace is sorely needed: in Sri Lanka only a negotiated solution can put an end to the conflict that causes so much bloodshed; Afghanistan is marked by growing unrest and instability; in the Middle East, besides some signs of hope in the dialogue between Israel and the Palestinian authority, nothing positive comes from Iraq, torn apart by continual slaughter as the civil population flees. In Lebanon the paralysis of the country's political institutions threatens the role that the country is called to play in the Middle East and puts its future seriously in jeopardy. Finally, I cannot forget the difficulties faced daily by the Christian communities and the exodus of Christians from that blessed Land which is the cradle of our faith. I affectionately renew to these populations the expression of my spiritual closeness.

Dear brothers and sisters, through the wounds of the Risen Christ we can see the evils which afflict humanity with the eyes of hope. In fact, by his rising the Lord has not taken away suffering and evil from the world but has vanquished them at their roots by the superabundance of his grace. He has countered the arrogance of evil with the supremacy of his love. He has left us the love that does not fear death, as the way to peace and joy. "Even as I have loved you he said to his disciples before his death so you must also love one another" (cf. John 13:34).

Brothers and sisters in faith, who are listening to me from every part of the world, Christ is risen and he is alive among us. It is he who is the hope of a better future. As we say with Thomas: "My Lord and my God!" May we hear again in our hearts the beautiful yet demanding words of the Lord: "If any one serves me, he must follow me; and where I am, there shall my servant be also; if any one serves me, the Father will honor him" (John 12:26). United to him and ready to offer our lives for our brothers (cf. 1 John 3:16), let us become apostles of peace, messengers of a joy that do not fear pain, the joy of the Resurrection. May Mary, Mother of the Risen Christ, obtain for us this Easter gift. Happy Easter to you all.

Buy A Gun Day Purchase

Buy A Gun day is April 15th, a fine day to make a statement regarding freedom.

I have jumped the gun so to speak and already made my purchase.

I sent in an Imbel FAL kit, DSA metric upper receiver and requisite U.S. made parts to be built and have another FAL added to my collection. This one will be a carbine with a 16.25" barrel.

Four reasons this was my choice:
1) Ammunition and parts commonality with existing possessions
2) It has a gas piston!
3) I found a DSA metric type II receiver for a reasonable price at a local gun shop

4) I have always been found of the FN FAL since reading SOF as a kid

I will have to purchase some accessories for my newest FAL; a DSA scope mount receiver cover and a holosight (either a Trijicon Reflex or an Eotech 55x).

However I will not accessorize mine as much as this one since at least one of those accessories would get me in hot water with my heterosexual life partner.

Pics shamelessly stolen from DSA and Oleg Volk.

Triumph Of Quality

Today I found several Shiner brewery beers left in my floating cooler by the pool.

They had languished there since the fall.

Upon icing and later consumption they were found to contain their previous vigor an flavor as a fine example of the brewer's art.

Yes, indeed fine things come from Texas.

Supporting The Second Amendment

I have been blessed in this life.

My wife understands the need and encourages my preparedness to defend our family.

My stepdaughters understand that freedom is not free. They know intuitively that as part of the fair gender as depicted by Victorian societal norms they are at risk of victimization by those stronger than they are. To offset this they arm themselves with effective tools to even the playing field. The tools as selected are firearms.

Whether that be 9mm Glock pistols or .38 S&W special revolvers, they have the ability to say NO and make it stick.

I proudly note that they also take their friends shooting.

Whether this is the Remington 870 Express I bought for my youngest stepdaughter when she moved out or her S&W model 10 revolver when she turned 21 years of age, they have taken their friends out and introduced them to firearms.

By their example and their evangelical belief in self defense they introduce those in their social circle to the concepts of self defense and demystification of the use of arms.

This is an example that all should follow.

Do not be afraid to introduce those who have never been out shooting to the use of arms. Invite them to a range day. Supply ammunition, safety instruction and patient guidance to those that have no familial culture of self protection and use of arms. Create advocates who will also spread th word of the inalienable Human Right to Self Defense.

Pink Pistols

I am a vehement supporter of the right of self defense. That one has an inalienable God given right and duty to defend one's life and that of their family is a given to me. This is why I support my fellow humanity in their quest to live freely, irregardless of differences in faith, origin, sexual preference or economic circumstance.

In accordance with my beliefs I am again affirming this in my support of the Pink Pistols, an organization for the gay and trans gendered community and their right to self defense.

No one deserves to victimized based upon their lifestyle choices provided they do not of course victimize others.

I know and call friends people from the gay community. They do not deserve to be the victims of attacks, whether that be groups of straight people out "rolling fags" (beating up gay people with baseball bats or what have you) or pogroms of one nature or another.

I am proud to be in a nation that supports my fellow citizens right to self defense.

The San Jose chapter of the Pink Pistols is about five years old, but was sitting inactive until Stallard took over two years ago. She's been orchestrating group shoots at the San Jose Municipal shooting range for the past eight months. She describes the group as a small, libertarian-flavored social club that welcomes anyone - regardless of sexual orientation - to participate. Stallard says there are about a dozen or so members, but only a handful of participants at the monthly shoots. She hopes to encourage more political activism as the chapter grows.

Carla Satra serves as range master for the San Jose chapter. She's in her early 60s and says she has been shooting guns since she was a little girl.

Satra says she's disgusted with "the maniacal hoplophobia [fear of weaponry] of the liberal left.

"I'm very much appalled by people who call themselves liberal that would be willing to sacrifice victims to criminal violence to support their politics.

"There are a great many so-called liberal people who have this wonderful fantasy of a world where there's no violence, and allow their fantasy world to demand that prospective victims be disarmed so they'll be helpless in the face of violent criminals. I'm appalled at the concept of victim disarmament. I really don't want to see any more violence, and weapons are a deterrent."
Emphasis added.

Myself and the 2nd Amendment supporting community welcomes their brothers and sisters in arms. Those that read and understand history know it is a short step from denigrating and controlling one community to doing so to the populace at large.

Remember this and welcome our brothers and sisters to the firearms community. We have far more in common than there are differences that separate us.

Hat tip to Keep And Bear Arms and the ever excellent Oleg Volk.

Insatiable Appetite Soured

I typically have an insatiable appetite for the printed word.

Whether it be history texts or science fiction novels, a guilty pleasure of mine, I purchase a great deal of books and read then reread them.

It takes a rather decidedly subpar effort for me to not finish a book.

This happened to me with Raymond Khoury's The Last Templar.

An another interesting title wrapped around crap.

The crap in question here was questioning of the Christian faith that has developed for the last two thousand years. As if the formation of that faith and its doctrine would not survive the so called revelation of an evolution in selected texts of the gospel and what makes up the Bible.

Give me a fricking break here people.

While you may disagree with Christian doctrine and point to failures in the bureaucratic representation of Christianity on Earth, that does not mean that the followers would be shattered by this revelation, so called.

And should you select this for a topic at least have the decency to write above a middle school level.

Granted I only selected this book to kill a few hours in an airport and flight that its volume of suck exceeded the point to being able to choke down the remainder during the flight is quite telling.
